Our Origins

NUWAY co-founder, Evans Nwankwo, grew up in the village of Awa, Nigeria...and his family lost its home, possessions, and security during a civil war. However, the Nwankwo family never lost its faith. That faith and hard work brought Evans to college in the United States and guided his construction career. And he carried a dream in his heart to improve life in Nigeria by giving back to those who struggle.

In 2006, that dream became reality, as Evans and Cathy Nwankwo created NUWAY Foundation with the purpose of making Awa and surrounding villages better places to live. 

Our "What"

NUWAY Foundation's mission is to transform lives in rural Nigeria through H.O.P.E. -- Healthcare, Opportunity, Pure water and Education.

Our "Why"

Quite frankly, we do what we do because we love Nigeria and its people--who are vibrant, industrious, beautiful...and in need.

Nigeria is approximately the size of Texas, yet it's the 6th most populous countries in the world with more 240 million people – well over half the population of the United States and 100 million people more than the next most populous nation in Africa. 

Although Nigeria is one of the world’s largest oil producers, its people continue to face severe systemic challenges with income inequality and poverty. Very few Nigerians benefit from the nation's oil wealth; in fact, more than 56% of Nigerians (about 126 million people) live below the national poverty line, struggling heavily with basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing.

• Nigeria has one of the highest HIV/AIDS burdens in the world, ranking among the top 4 globally.
• Roughly 1 out of 9 children (approx. 110 per 1,000 live births) still die before the age of five from preventable or treatable diseases.
• Average life expectancy is 54 years old.
• There are roughly 0.3 to 0.4 physicians for every 1,000 people.
• Nigeria faces an acute educational crisis with an estimated 15 to 18 million children out of school.
